On January 9, 2022, Metaverse Forum was successfully held by School of Business and Management MBA Center, SISU in MBA Lecture Room of Hongkou Campus. This forum was targeted at teachers and students of MBA and simultaneous live stream was prepared for all the audience interested in this topic.
This forum aimed to provide a feast of knowledge to the audience, with many experts present to elaborate on the concept and new trend of Metaverse, and explore opportunities provided by it for all industries in the future.Professoressor Yu Guoming, Director of Academic Board of School of Journalism and Communication of Beijing Normal University, Director of Artificial Intelligence and Future Media Lab, Deputy Director of the Union of Beijing Social Science, President of Media Economy and Management of Chinese Association for History of Journalism and Communication, Mr. Fan Shibo, Director of China Broadband and Application Engineering Technology Research Center Lab,Professoressor. Songyan, Academic Director of MBA Center, doctoral supervisor of School of Business and Management, Professoressor Wang Xin, Director of MBA Center, doctoral supervisor of School of Business and Management attended the forum.
As guests and audience were seated, this forum officially kicked off. Professor Song Yan gave an opening speech as a host, briefly introduced the concept of Metaverse and pointed out that Metaverse just comes into our view and is not an illusion. After that, Professor Song Yan introduced guests that would offer speeches, which marked the beginning of this forum. Professor Yu Guoming, Mr. Fan Shibo, Mr. Dong Longhui and Professor Song Yan respectively made keynote speeches.
Professor Yu Guoming gave a speech themed on Metaverse: nature, implications and strategies. He put that Metaverse is not a single technology but rather a convergence of a series of technological innovations, and that Metaverse symbolizes a combination of digital technologies, a digital media that integrates the present and the future, an indicator of the prospect of the future society. From the perspective of communication, Metaverse marks the development of media, hence it illustrates the prospect of the future. The development of the Internet is increasingly becoming an organic whole of all resources in society, therefore, we need to have good command of data, make good use of algorithm and find solutions to upcoming problems. At the end of his speech, ProfessorYu mentioned that human are the benchmark of media and the unchanged focus in the evolution of media. The development of media serves to help humans explore the unknown, leverage more resources, find more approaches, and achieve what humans intend to be. Moreover, in use of Metaverse and future media, we need to adopt a human-oriented approach to better serve people and guide future communication.
Mr. Fan Shibo delivered a speech themed on Metaverse: with artificial intelligence ahead. Mr. Fan rendered that China’s economy is moving towards a trend of stable growth, with artificial intelligence an integral player. The concept of Metaverse is not new. Against the backdrop of technological transformation, we can imagine China as the virtual reality and others a parallel world. After four industrial revolutions transitioned from mechanization,electrification, intelligentization, the next trend of all industries must be digitization. Then, Mr. Fan put forward that the aim of using artificial intelligence is to empower human not to replace human. On top of that, artificial intelligence, which is more than an industry and changes human’s perceptions, marks our entrance of a new era. And in turn, intelligentization may restructure and reshape human society. Before concluding the speech, Mr. Fan emphasized that artificial intelligence is shaping the future of human and Metaverse, and at the same time is effecting influence on human and Metaverse in the future.
Mr. Dong Longhui delivered a speech themed on Metaverse: impacts on medical industry. Mr. Dong said in a witty manner that Metaverse may bring about transformative changes to medical and healthcare industry. First comes to treatment using western medicine, which relies heavily on telemedicine. A remarkable example may be the successful remote operation by Professor Tian Wei from spine surgery of Beijing Ji Shuitan Hospital. With the support of China Telecom 5G network and Huawei Communication Technology, Professor Tian completed a remote 3D operation for patients from three different regions. Yet it may not be that feasible to patients from distant areas. Second comes to psychotherapy. In the future, psychological counseling may become more Professoressional by employing specific equipment to capture patients’ psychological changes.
Professor Song Yan delivered a speech themed on Metaverse: opportunities versus risks, sharing her understanding of Metaverse. First and foremost, Professor Song explained the fundamental concept of Metaverse: Facebook is renamed to Meta. At the same time, Magnets of Digital enterprises including Nvidia, Microsoft, Tencent, Netease and Bytedance announced their strategies related to Metaverse. As Metaverse comes in an irresistible way, Capitals were busy planning with robust investment motivation, research institutions emerged, more importance was attached to talent development. Furthermore, Metaverse is unique while interpretations of it are not. Although there are numerous articles and videos about Metaverse, we still do not have an exact definition of it. Metaverse is a complex concept which integrates different new technologies. But what form will Metaverse take and what the prospect of it will be like? This is a question for both students and teachers to ponder. Finally, Professor Song suggested that we need to grab opportunities provided by Metaverse, pay attention to difficulties posed by the overwhelming technology and innovations, and meanwhile avert possible risks, solve problems and then shift risks.
Lastly, this forum came to an end, with the audience and guests fully engaging into discussion, experts offering detailed answers to each question, which sheds light on the concept of Metaverse.
