Topic: Financial Transaction Taxes: An Experimental Investigation

Abstract:

This lecture briefly introduces the history of financial transaction taxes, and related policy considerations, as well as current implementation of these taxes worldwide. It will also present an experimental study designed to evaluate the impacts of financial transaction taxes on market outcomes, including bubbles formation and size, trading volumes, profits and volatility.

Guest Speaker:

Dr. Qi Li is currently professor and dean of the department of economics at Agnes Scott College , and serves as a director of the Chinese  Economists Society. She was the Distinguished Chair of FULBRIGHT awards in 2012-2013 and 2018-2019. She received her PhD in economics from the university of Pittsburgh in 2004 and later did postdoctoral research at Columbia University. Her main research areas include experimental and behavioral economics and finance, as well as the Chinese economy. She has conducted research in many international academic journals (Journal of Finance, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Journal of Financial Markets, Business Ethics Quarterly, Southern Economic Journal, China Economic Review, etc. Journal of Chinese Economic and Business Studies, Chinese Economy, etc.). Dr. Qi was a visiting scholar in the financial department of the federal reserve bank of America (Atlanta branch) and a visiting professor at the center for experimental economics of Georgia state university. Her research has won wide grants support from many international institutions (the National Institutes of Health, Mellon Foundation, Asia Network, Freeman Foundation, Ronald Coase Institute, National Science Foundation, NBER etc.).
